[ABSTRACT] Using METEOSAT-5 and GMS-5 data, and NCEP/NCAR 850 hPa wind, large-scale cloudiness variations over the Asian Pacific Ocean are examined. In the Asian-Pacific region in Northem Summer, the dominant variations are“dipole type pattern" in which convective activity are enhanced (suppressed) in the East Indian Ocean(from the Bay of Bengal to the Western Pacific). The associated wind fields well correspond to those convective activities. Diurnal variation of convective activity is also investigated using the same METEOSAT-5 IR data. It shows the relationship with monsoon intraseasonal variation (onset, break).
