[ABSTRACT]Grasslands are an important land use and land cover in Mongolia. It is particularly unique that more than 99 per cent of Mongolia's agricultural area is grasslands. Changes in this vast agricultural area have implications not only for the country's economic future prospect but also for impact on regional environment. The use of satellite based 8-km vegetation index time-series dataset over 20 years (1981-2000] signaled potentially contrasting spatial patterns before and after 1990 when the country moved from planned economy to market economy. The concentration of declining vegetation activity in the north-central region particularly after 1990 appeared to coincide with the distribution of croplands and the areas of increasing livestock density.
