[Abstract] In this paper, we report on the development of an educational program and the expansion of the role of the Certified Nurse in Breast Cancer Nursing (CN in BCN) for the first time in Japan. The educational program was established at the Chiba University School of Nursing in 2005 and consisted of lectures, exercises and practical training along with standard curriculum determined by the Japan Nursing Association. Full-time faculty members took full responsibility for this program.We collaborated with clinical instructors in clinical practice and provided detailed individual instruction to trainees.We reviewed and revised the program based on the results of course evaluation of the educational program and management issues. With the expansion of the role of CN in BCN, we disseminated information about the role of CN in BCN through press releases, press conferences, civic public lectures and reports. A survey on the activities of CN in BCN indicated that graduates are fulfilling their roles; nursing administrators mentioned that the quality of nurses has been improved and CN in BCN are contributing to team-based medical care. Based on the knowledge and skills they acquire through educational activities for nurses at our university, graduates are demonstrating the role of CN by providing quality care. A future task is to create a network for CN in BCN who attend various educational institutions.
