This article explores the mechanisms by which historic sites were created during the Edo period. To accomplish this, I analyzed the　founding histories（engi ）of Jodo― Shinshu― temples located in the Mito domain. General speaking, most temple histories are thought to have been handed down without interruption or change. However, in the Edo period, as a result of feudal lords starting to acquire geographical knowledge of the lands they ruled, some temples became historic sites with histories that were quickly created. Then, during the middle years of the Edo period, there was a growing tendency to seek historical accuracy in such records. Learned priests also appeared who wrote down long-held traditions based on reliable historical source. Interestingly, a commercialist trend also became evident at the same time, and episodes with elements of entertainment were added to the temple histories with the aim of attracting a large number of pilgrims. Yet, historical accuracy tended to be required even as entertaining qualities were sought. Thus, the temple histories incorporated a varietyof values and were constructed in a multilayered fashion. When treating these temple histories as historical resources, scholars need to carve into that multilayered structure to pursue their analyses.
