[SUMMARY] Purpose : This study was conducted to examine the efficacy and feasibility of nursing role behavior indicators used to support oral intake in dysphagic residents of special elderly care homes. Methods : The indicators consisted of four major items showing support targets that nurses should approach together with other professional staff, 20 middle items showing role behaviors specific to nurses, and 60 minor items showing explicit role behaviors. The trial method was explained to nurses. A three-month trial of the indicators was conducted with nine nurses in four institutions of different sizes and systems of providing care. These nine nurses cooperated with 12 care workers in supporting nine residents with dysphagia, and the indicators were tested based on the changes in behavior and attitudes of nurses before and after the trial. Results : Five nurses who had never before attempted to provide organizational support for oral intake understood what they were supposed to do, including the reasons for the behaviors, based on the indicators. They noticed such tasks as observing the residents when they eat and supporting oral function, and acted with reference to the minor items to achieve their tasks. The four other nurses assessed their own practices based on the indicators, noticed tasks such as readjusting the care provision system and supporting the formation of competence in care workers, executed their roles according to changes in the situation, and achieved their tasks. They did not feel that conducting the trial was a burden, and said that they intended to utilize the indicators in training and other situations. Discussion : Considering the improved practices, the indicators are thought to be useful and feasible for use as tools to support learning and evaluate practices as they show the reasons and roles for care in supporting oral intake by special home nurses.
