[ABSTRACT] This research note consists of a short narrative of how an early career scholar at Chiba University’s newly established College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) attempted to combine his Area Studies background with the pedagogical imperatives of his new place of work. The argument develops chronologically, through three specific instances in which the author was encouraged by his students, his study abroad committee duties, and his colleagues, to consider 1) if LAS is different from “traditional” liberal arts curricula, 2) if liberal arts and sciences at Chiba University could be reframed as “studies in transdisciplinarity”, and 3) how a transdisciplinary approach could be taught to students working on their graduation projects. This 4-year reflection hints also (collaterally) at the need for universities to foster an environment in which transprofessionalism and work integrity are actively valued.
