[SUMMARY] This study aimed to explore the thoughts and behaviors of mothers raising their children with acquired disabilities （ADs）, disclose the change process of the mothers’ experiences, and gain implications for nursing to support these children and families. Semi-structured interviews, with five mothers of children with ADs, were qualitatively and inductively analyzed. Fifty-five experiences extracted from all the cases were integrated into eleven themes. The mothers at first experienced “regrets and sufferings facing their child’s critical condition” but eventually made “a decision to support and live with the child fighting to survive.” They then came to “believe in possibilities left in the child, making the best possible decisions.” Later, despite their “complex feelings looking at healthy or sick children in their community,” they started “sharing their experiences with school and society to seek for better understanding and support.” Following these experiences, they “arranged their living environment to support the growth of the child and the siblings.” They “sensed the child’s growth, wishing to create more comfortable and enjoyable environment for the child.” The following implications for nursing are gained : nurses should inform the family of the child’s stability, changes, or tenacity to help the family sense the child’s strength for survival and find hope; nurses should work with the family to seek for support in the community ; and nurses can help mothers maintain the well-being of the family so that they may continue to live with the child, regarding living with the child as part of child-rearing, not as special caregiving.
