[SUMMARY] Learning materials for caregivers dealing with dementia patients, and research about the implementation of those materials, exist in abundance. However, the development process of such materials has rarely been considered. In this paper, we report the developmental processes of e-learning materials on dementia care to deepen family caregivers’ knowledge and understanding of what is involved in the early stages of care. Detailing such processes can find the contents and features of the material and benefit future material developers. A modified, five-stage instructional design process?analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation （ADDIE） ?was used to develop the materials. This paper reports on the first three stages ; the last two stages will be reported in a future paper. The analysis stage involved a literature review. From this review, it was determined that dementia caregivers require educational support, particularly in the early stages of care. Four important teaching areas also emerged : communicating with older people with dementia, dealing with people who have dementia, using available social resources, and family caregivers’ self-care. Further, it was found that e-learning materials that are accessible through electronic tablets would be most useful for busy caregivers. Following the analysis, materials were designed. Two doctors and two nurses provided quality oversight in confirming the validity and utility of the content. In the future, implementation and evaluation of these materials will be required for family caregivers of early-stage dementia patients.
