近年,外国語学習において英文データを直接的に観察して行うデータ駆動型学習(data-driven learning: DDL)の効果が注目されている。筆者らがこれまでに行ったDDL指導実践では,品詞の区別のような文法の基礎事項の指導が大学英語初級学習者に対して効果をあげることを確認した。本研究は大学院に所属する英語上級学習者に対してDDLを実施し,新聞英語に出現するキーワードを観察して,語彙知識を深める指導を行った。学習者は,新聞の英文テキストに日本語訳が提示される日英パラレルコーパス(内山・井佐原,2003)とBarlow(2002)の検索ソフトを用いてキーワードを検索し,ワークシートに解答しながら,語彙の多義性,コロケーション,複合語,類義語の使い分け等について語彙知識を深めた。指導効果を事前・事後テストおよび質問紙により検証したところ,パラレルコーパスを利用したDDL学習が,英語上級学習者の語彙知識の深化に役立ったことが確認できた。また,質問紙調査の結果から,パラレルコーパスを使ったDDLが学習者の興味を引き出し,学習者自身も語彙力の養成に役立つと感じていたことが確認できた。
Since DDL (data-driven learning) has been considered beneficial for language learning, we have attempted to use DDL in English classrooms at graduate school. Our previous studies have found that DDL has been effective for beginner-level Japanese EFL learners to understand grammar basics such as parts of speech. In this study, we used DDL for advanced-level learners to develop their vocabulary knowledge observing keywords in authentic contexts. Learners used a Japanese-English parallel corpus (Utiyama & Isahara, 2003) and bilingual concordancer (Barlow,2002), and learned and deepened their vocabulary knowledge by answering the worksheets we created. The emphasis in the work sheets was on expanding learners' knowledge of the varieties of meanings of a target word, collocation of a target word, compound words including a target word, understand the different nuances of similar words, etc. The results of the pretest and posttest show that the learners were able to deepen their knowledge of vocabulary. In addition the learners considered that using DDL with a parallel corpus was an interesting and effective way to deepen their vocabulary knowledge.
