[SUMMARY] Objectives: To elucidate the support policies provided by nurses at Community General Support Centers for older persons with dementia who live alone (ODs) for continuing life in their community and examine their characteristics. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve nurses working at eleven centers in six municipalities about nursing strategies and processes for ODs who do not get along with their neighbors and family members. The support policies were extracted and grouped based on situations in which there were differences in thoughts and intentions between the ODs and their neighbors or families. Data were qualitatively and inductively analyzed. Results: Ten categories were identified from 27 situations. The nurses developed support policies and provided concurrent care for several persons, including “alleviating behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) of ODs through psychological stabilization, and reducing mental stress and anxiety via mental supports for residents who were affected by BPSD”, “reducing the risk of falls and fires by improving the safety situation in the OD’s home, and reducing fire anxiety in the neighborhood”. The nurses also intended to “hold community care meetings to promote an understanding of dementia within the community, build relationships among participants, and create support systems for ODs”. Discussion: The support policies aimed to create inclusive societies where ODs, families, and residents can continue to live together in peace and harmony. The findings provide a concrete direction for the realization of the principles of normalization and social inclusion of ODs.
