ブルームの６分類法（Bloom’s Taxonomy）

[SUMMARY] This study conducted English textbooks analyses using Japanese elementary and junior high school textbooks.The focus was placed on the ability for students to think, make judgments, and express themselves, which is emphasized in the new Course of Study. Bloom’s taxonomy was used as a framework to reveal how thinking abilities were used in textbooks. The results showed that both elementary and junior high school English textbooks have more activities related to LOTS (Low Order Thinking Skills) than HOTS (High Order Thinking Skills). More specifically, elementary school English textbooks have many activities focusing on acquiring fundamental knowledge and skills. On the other hand, the beginning section of a junior high school English textbook concentrates on reviewing and applying what students have learned in the previous school stage, so the overall number of activities related to just remembering was low. Therefore, English textbooks in Japanese help teachers facilitate the smooth transition between elementary and junior high schools. However, it is not easy to develop all three abilities (thinking, making judgments, and expressing oneself) by using textbooks only.
