[SUMMARY] Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify care providers’ involvement in capturing the self-care of older people with dementia. Method: This study is a secondary analysis of participant observation data collected in a previous study by the authors wherein self-care of older people with dementia and chronic heart failure was identified. The individuals requiring support (hereafter referred to as "subjects") were five people aged between 70 to 100, living with dementia, and residing in a long-term care facility. Data pertaining to “the participant observer’s involvement in the subject’s self-care and the subject’s reaction to it” were extracted from the participant observation data and analyzed qualitatively by inductive method. The first author was involved as a participant observer in capturing the subject’s self-care. Results: Three types of care provider involvement to capture the self-care of older people with dementia at long-term care facilities were identified: (Theme 1) “involvement to understand the intention of the subject’s words and actions related to self-care,” (Theme 2) “involvement to confirm the subject’s recognition leading to self-care,” and (Theme 3) “involvement to support the subject’s ability to achieve self-care.” Discussion: The results suggest that care providers can capture the self-care of older people with dementia as they strive to understand the intentions of these people’s words and actions, confirm the perceptions that lead to their self-care, and support the strengths of older people with dementia. This involvement can be used as a concrete way for care providers to practice care that supports dignity and independence.
