[Abstract] This study aimed to propose a strategy to support learners’ autonomous and continuous vocabulary learning using the 3D Vocabulary Levels Test (3D VLT), an educational English vocabulary assessment system developed for Japanese learners of English. Participants were 168 first-year Japanese college students. They took four types of English vocabulary size tests on the evaluation system and subsequently answered a questionnaire survey. Analysis was conducted by calculating the Pearson’s correlation coefficient to determine whether there was a relationship between vocabulary size as measured by each test format and English language proficiency as measured by the TOEFL ITP test. Furthermore, the changes in attitudes toward vocabulary learning were observed qualitatively through the open-ended statements in the questionnaire. The study findings indicated a high correlation between vocabulary size as measured by the controlled productive vocabulary test and English language proficiency. In addition, participants reported that taking multiple forms of vocabulary size tests enabled them to “become aware of the fact that they had forgotten English vocabulary,” “be cognizant of the need for vocabulary learning methods suitable for themselves,” “review the purpose of vocabulary learning,” and “perceive the value of developing practical vocabulary.” Results suggested that taking the 3D VLT on a regular basis has the potential to act as a support tool for autonomous and continuous vocabulary learning while creating an awareness of the degree to which one’s current vocabulary level deviates from the target vocabulary level.
