[SUMMARY] The author experienced 58 days from January 26, 2021 to March 24, 2021 during COVID-19 in China with the aim of conducting fieldwork. This study presents the author’s experiences in research travel with China’s COVID-19 border measures and Zero-COVID policy, including the travel preparation, quarantine life in Xi’an which was the transit point, quarantine life in Hohhot where the author’s home located, and the situation of survey site in Sonid Left Banner. Unlike large Chinese cities with strict quarantine regimes, Sonid Left Banner was barely affected by the COVID-19. Since the pastoral areas are sparsely populated places, there were no infected cases of the COVID-19 in 2021. However, due to the rampant spread of COVID-19 virus variant Omicron, cases of infection were reported there since June, 2022. Severe lockdowns by Zero-COVID policy made lives of pastoralists far more difficult. The situation is also presented in this study based on online interviews.
