J. S. Mill’s Republican Interpretation: Using the Concept of “Individuality”

[SUMMARY] The purpose of this paper is to clarify J. S. Millʼs republican understanding by focusing on the concept of individuality. J. S. Millʼs political philosophy has a significant civic component, which he is a committed believer in the value of active participation in public affairs by the citizens of liberal democracies, and he cares a to cultivate public spirit. Although this point has not received much attention until recently, the arguments focusing on Millʼs civic virtue have been presented by many researchers. In this paper as well, from this point, I attempt to reinterpret Millʼs political thought as his “individuality.” Similarly, his concept of “individuality”, it is often read as celebration of individual eccentricity and self-assertion. But this is only part of his concept of individuality. First, I present a Millʼs republican interpretation with reference to recent research on republicanism. I will describe aspects of Mill other than his liberal side, which have been emphasized in conventional Mill studies. Through this, I clarify another aspect of Mill, a concrete description of the republican point of view. Second half I describe Millʼs idea of “Individuality” as having civic individuality. I will indicate Millʼs individuality require an attitude of receptivity to the world and to others. And I think ”Individuality” has selfcreativity, which we fashions lives of our own, lives that reflect values and aspirations called from our own experience and reflection. By capturing individuality as described above, it can be confirmed that Millʼs political philosophy has a republican point of view.
