An oral history of urban Mongolian woman in China (6) : Ms. Manu

[ABSTRACT] This text is an oral history of Ms. Manu, born in 1947, who came from the Khorchin Right Wing Middle Banner, Hinggan League, Inner Mongolia, China and now lives in Beijing, the capital of China. This interview was conducted over two major sessions, one in 2018 and the other in 2023, five years later. Therefore, the content regarding changes since 2018 is specifically separated. Ms. Manu came from a landowner class, and after struggling to make ends meet, she found a job in Ulanmuchir, a Nei Monggol revolutionary cultural troupe, when she was thirty-two years old and became a singer. Her husband was also a performer in Ulannmuchir, and their two children were piano teachers. Ms. Manu’s family is an artistically talented musical family. She retired when she was fifty years old, and two years later, she and her husband followed their son (who had formed a band and became active in Beijing) to Beijing and the two opened a Mongolian restaurant. Many of the customers of Ms. Manu's Mongolian restaurant are Mongolian students and professors living in Beijing. The restaurant is located near the Minzu University of China, which has a relatively large Mongolian population. Ms. Manu and her husband have gradually expanded the scale of their business and were preparing to open a 1,000 square meter Mongolian restaurant in the Fengtai district, where the new campus of the Minzu University of China is located, in September 2023. This oral history tells us about the changes in their lives since the establishment of the People's Republic of China, their management of a Mongolian restaurant in Beijing, and their response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
