Analysis of Factors Affecting Student Satisfaction and Motivation in English Education

[Abstract] 　This study aimed to analyze factors influencing student satisfaction and motivation in compulsory English courses at a Japanese university and to provide insights for educational improvement. A survey was conducted in six English courses during the spring semester of 2024, with responses collected from 3,778 students（ response rate: 58.3%）. Multiple regression analysis revealed that teaching methods had the strongest impact on student satisfaction across all courses. Other critical factors included satisfaction with teacher feedback and the perceived improvement in English skills, particularly in Discussion and Writing courses. Additionally, text mining of students’ open-ended survey responses identified “homework” as a key factor affecting motivation, both positively and negatively. Writing courses, which required the most time for homework, demonstrated that students appreciated assignments when instructions were clear, and deadlines were appropriate. These students reported increased writing skills and personal growth, viewing the workload positively. The findings suggest that clear communication and proper support from teachers are essential for making homework an effective part of learning rather than a mere burden.
