Digital Spirituality on Social Network Services : A Hybrid Ethnographic Trial Using KHCoder

[Abstract] In the post-COVID era, media outlets have increasingly highlighted the rising interest in fortune-telling content, with astrology and spirituality influencers gaining prominence on social media and blogs. This has led to the formation of loosely connected communities around them. Drawing on the concept of "digital religion," this paper introduces the term "digital spirituality" to characterize these phenomena, using a hybrid qualitative and quantitative approach. I focus on a case study of a spiritual network centered around an organization that hosts events for spirituality influencers and curates blog articles written by event participants. These articles are collected on a popular SNS platform, creating a dynamic repository where spirituality is organized and shared as information. By analyzing a collection of over 1,000 articles, I trace the network’s evolution over four years and examine how various forms of online and offline content are communicated by the organization’s managers, influencers, and followers. Through this analysis, I demonstrate that a quantitative approach—offering insights into the fluid nature of online networks—can be a valuable tool for studying digital spirituality and provide a foundation for future research on non-institutional religion.
