Climate Change Risks and Digital Humanities : Insights from DH2024

[Abstract] This paper explores the role of digital humanities (DH) in addressing climate change risks to cultural heritage based on insights from DH2024. It focuses on the SIRIUS Project at the University of Bologna, which integrates digital methodologies and citizen engagement to enhance heritage protection from climate-related disasters. The project develops digital systems such as HeRO, an ontology-based risk assessment framework, and the GIS-based Risk Atlas, enabling systematic heritage risk data management. Additionally, it promotes public participation through initiatives such as insight, an interactive disaster risk awareness game, and I-CARE, a cultural heritage risk awareness campaign. This study highlights how the integration of digital data management and citizen science fosters a more inclusive approach to cultural heritage preservation. By combining expert knowledge with local insights, the project enhances public awareness, improves risk assessment, and strengthens heritage resilience. Moreover, it suggests that DH research serves as a bridge between experts and citizens, thus facilitating sustainable heritage conservation strategies. Ultimately, this paper argues that digital technologies and participatory methodologies are essential in mitigating climate change risks and ensuring the long-term protection of cultural heritage.
