[ABSTRACT] The aim of this paper consider the introduction of Swedish Gymnastics to Japan by the comparison of Kawase's "Suweden shiki Taiso"(1902) and its original edition, Nils Posses, "The Special Kinesiology of Educational Gymnastics"(1894) focusing on the illustrations deleted in Kawase's translation. There existed two branches in Swedish Gymnastics since Ling's death : the one is 'The Lingianism' stressing on the original form of Ling's Gymnastics and the other emphasizes 'The Natural Method'. As Posse's Book depends on "Gymnastiska Ställningar och Rörelseformer"(1893) classified in the Lingianism', Kawase's Book took the role to introduce 'The Lingianism' to Japan. Being lack of fund, it is difficult to set up new teaching materials needful to Swedish Gymnastics in Japan at that time. Therefore Kawase deleted some illustrations concerning new materials adopted in the original edition. For the above reasons Swedish Gymnastics introduced to Pre―war Japan Omitted its various aspects, and hence, it was one―sided.
