[SUMMARY] The purpose of this study is to elucidate the current status of early childhood mathematics education in Sweden and to show its characteristics. For this purpose, we overviewed the current status of mathematics education in Sweden, from preschool level to the third grade of elementary school, based on the curriculum, and the objectives and contents of mathematics education. In addition, observations in a Swedish preschool and kindergartens and interviews with teachers was conducted. In particular, the results of interviews with teachers was analyzed based on PCK. The results show that teachers regard mathematics as a content to be learned in the early childhood years, give it importance, and relate it to various activities; that the cantents of teaching mathematics are not only numbers and calculations, but also geometrical figures, quantities, and patterns; that the teachers place more importance on encountering mathematics than on being able to do mathematics, and that they view children as individuals and relate to them as such.
