[SUMMARY] This study aimed to develop a lower secondary school art curriculum to enhance students’ competencies in understanding and creating art and culture through a traditional craft project emphasising design activities. In recent years, art education has become increasingly important for the development of leaders in a sustainable society. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in 2001. In addition, the Course of Study for Arts indicates that students should deepen their knowledge and understanding of traditions and cultures, develop international understanding through art and an interest in the inheritance and creation of art and culture, and acquire competencies that respect cultural diversity. A traditional craft curriculum was implemented, and data were collected and analysed qualitatively. The results suggest that explicitly including design activities in the curriculum fostered comprehensive support for developing students’ design ideas and encouraged embodied learning. Regarding cultural understanding, further consideration is needed on how to incorporate the development of critical thinking into the curriculum so that students become aware of their cultural backgrounds and perspectives.
